Three ways on, depending on where you stand

todrive.ch does not put one driving school above another. The site shows what a driving school offers — the choice stays yours.

Our own road to a driving licence is not that long ago: the Nothelferkurs (first-aid course), the theory test, plenty of driving lessons and, of course, the practical driving test. Left to ourselves, each of us had to keep track of countless rules, fill in applications and meet deadlines. The what-has-to-be-done-when-and-how-and-where occasionally left us out of our depth. That is where the idea for todrive.ch came from: a platform for learner drivers and a thoroughly practical guide through (almost) every question about learning to drive. So that nobody has to start searching from scratch all over again.

Where the prices come from

145 of the 169 driving schools publish a car price. Every price on this site is the one the driving school maintains itself, converted to a 45-minute lesson so two schools can be compared. Trial lessons are left out: a one-off introductory price is not a driving lesson. The same calculation stands behind every town page and the national price index.

Principle

No school ranked above another

todrive.ch shows facts and helps you find. It does not grade. There is no score, no rank, no “test winner”, and no school is drawn paler or smaller than the one beside it. A higher lesson price can mean sixty minutes instead of forty-five, an automatic car, or being picked up at home. Which school fits is your decision.

Why a price has to be converted

A driving lesson is not the same length everywhere. At 62 schools it lasts 45 minutes, at 61 it is 50, at 19 it is 60 — 7 different lengths in all. CHF 90 for 45 minutes and CHF 90 for 60 minutes differ by a third — so the advertised prices cannot be compared at all. That is why no advertised price stands on this site, only one converted to the same 45 minutes.

How we calculate: the town pages

On every town page – for example driving schools in Zürich – todrive.ch recomputes the figures each time the page is loaded, from the profiles the driving schools maintain themselves. The date on the page is the day of the calculation.

  • Which schools: every listed school within the radius around the town; the radius is shown on the page (usually 15 km).
  • Price per school: per gearbox the price its card shows (the highest price per minute), without trial lessons, converted to 45 minutes or to the lesson length you choose. Values below CHF 0.80 or above CHF 4.00 per minute are left out.
  • Average and range: the average is the mean over the schools, rounded to whole francs; the range runs from the lowest to the highest card price. Figures appear only from three schools.
  • Lesson length: how many schools offer which length; the most common one is named once at least two schools offer it.
  • Whole licence: 30 lessons including the insurance fee, with a package where the school offers one; schools that state no fee are left out. The page names the school in the middle (median), plus the fixed items from first-aid course to WAB course from the cost calculator, each with its source. 30 lessons are a basis for the calculation, not a recommendation.
  • Motorcycle: the same rule as for cars, from the motorcycle prices of the schools; an average only from three schools.
  • Ratings: the Google rating stored in the profile and reloaded weekly. The town page shows only how ratings spread – how many schools are rated, the range of grades and of review counts – from three rated schools.
  • VKU price: from our survey of the driving schools’ websites (VKU), per canton from three prices.
  • No ranking: todrive.ch gives no grades and no places; you choose how the list is sorted.
