WAB course Switzerland: price, deadline and what happens
The WAB course (Weiterausbildung, also called the two-phase course or Schleuderkurs) is the compulsory course for new drivers holding a licence on probation: one day of 7 hours, which you attend within 12 months of being issued the probationary licence. At the 31 providers that publish their price, it costs CHF 255 to 390 on a weekday with your own car, CHF 339 in the middle (prices read on 2026-10-05).

What the WAB course costs across Switzerland
On 2026-10-05 we read the website of every Swiss course organiser that the association of cantonal road traffic offices recognises; one more is in Liechtenstein. Three pairs offer the same course, which leaves 37 providers at 53 venues, and 31 of them publish a price for the car. For each provider we count its cheapest regular weekday price for category B with your own car, without member, voucher or promotional discounts: CHF 255 at the lowest, CHF 339 in the middle, CHF 390 at the highest. Saturdays cost on average CHF 29 more, lunch is included at 7 providers, and where a car can be hired it costs CHF 30 to 200.

The deadline, and what happens if you miss it
After 12 months without the course you can be fined up to CHF 300, unless you can show it was objectively impossible, for instance because your licence was withdrawn or you were training abroad.
Until the expiry date of the probationary licence (field 4b) you can still attend without a special permit. Once it has expired, the canton issues a driving permit limited to the course day if you show a booking confirmation from a recognised provider. In the canton of Bern that permit costs CHF 80, and you may only drive again once the unlimited licence has arrived.
What the course covers
The ordinance sets three aims: braking quickly and safely with the full deceleration your vehicle can deliver, driving economically, and understanding what causes accidents through realistic driving situations. Groups have six to twelve people, cars and motorcycles separately; you come in your own vehicle as a rule, and the organiser must hold comprehensive insurance for it. There is no test: the organiser confirms your attendance and reports it to the canton electronically.
After the course
You receive the unlimited licence once the probation period has ended and you have attended the course. In Bern it arrives by post about three weeks before the expiry date, without an application. More on the three years: licence on probation.
