International Driving Permit Switzerland: how to apply

Usually between 20 and 40 francs, depending on the canton – for example 20 francs in Zürich, 30 in St. Gallen, 40 in Schwyz (as of September 2026, figures from the offices). In most cantons you also need a recent passport photo.

Three years. If you still hold the Führerausweis auf Probe (probationary licence), the international permit is only valid for as long as the Probezeit (probationary period) lasts.

In the EU, in the EFTA states and in many other countries the Swiss credit-card-format licence is enough. The International Driving Permit is a translation for countries that do not recognise the Swiss licence, and it is often asked for by hire car companies and at police checks outside Europe – for instance in parts of Asia, South America and Africa. Ask the hire car company or the embassy of the country you are travelling to before you leave.

Often on the spot at the counter, and usually within a few working days by post or online. Order it before you travel, not at the airport: it cannot be issued from abroad.
