Eye test
- Print out the Lernfahrgesuch (learner drive application) from the Strassenverkehrsamt (cantonal road traffic office) of the canton you live in.
- Fill in your personal details in advance.
- Choose an optician, make an appointment and take the application form and an identity document with you

Apply for the Lernfahrausweis (learner’s permit)
- Submit the Lernfahrgesuch at the municipal administration or residents’ registration office of the place you live. You have to go there in person. You will need the completed application form with the eye test, your Nothelferausweis, passport photos and your ID card, passport or residence permit.
- Is your application form filled in completely and every question answered?

Receiving the reference number for the theory test arrives by post
- The Strassenverkehrsamt sends you a card with a registration number that lets you sign up for the theory test.

- Get hold of the right learning materials.
- Work out a study plan. You will find 5 tips for learning the theory here.
- Have you studied enough and do you feel confident on the theory?
- Register for the test with your reference number. In some cantons you do not need to book in advance.

- Turn up at your booked test appointment (better a little early – around 20 minutes).
- Bring your identity document (ID card/passport or residence permit) and your appointment confirmation.
- Avoid the most common mistakes that many people before you have already made.

Practical driving training
- Find the right driving instructor for you.
- Take your first driving lessons.
- Do not forget to buy the «blue L». You need it in order to practise privately.
- If possible, do some private practice drives as well.

Verkehrskundeunterricht (road-awareness course)
- Complete the Verkehrskundeunterricht VKU at your driving school.

Practical driving test
- Are you ready for the test? Does your instructor think so too?
- Has your instructor registered you for the test?
- Last lesson before the test: go through the details once more with your instructor.
- Take your Lernfahrausweis with you to the test.
- Be at the test centre in good time. You normally go to the appointment together with your instructor.
- Once your examiner has introduced himself, the test drive begins.
- You find out whether you have passed the practical test straight after the test drive.
- If you have passed, you get a «Passed» stamp in your Lernfahrausweis.

Receiving the licence on probation arrives by post
- After a few days you receive the temporary licence in credit card format.

Further training course (WAB)
- You have to complete the WAB-Kurs within 12 months of passing the driving test.
